'Sophie L Meredith made
her debut on the slam poetry scene, coming third at the state finals in
2017. Staying true to her authentic self, Sophie’s talent is seamlessly
revealed through her first book – We’re Going Ahead Without You.
Although her journey in poetry only started last year, you can’t tell
she’s new to it. Sophie’s poetry is autobiographical, telling some of
her own and a few close family members’ stories. She explores a plethora
of emotions that resonate with the reader; from sorrow to happiness,
heartbreak to love, we feel it all. Notably, her poem ‘Isabelle’
explores the final moments of life. It’s raw and heartbreaking, and in
it we feel her family’s grief. Meanwhile, her poem ‘We’re Going Ahead
Without You’, which was written during Australia’s same-sex marriage
debate, reflects Sophie’s activism for LGBTQI rights. By generating a
discourse on social justice issues, this poem creates a paradigm of us
(Australia) and them (who Sophie calls the “anti-equality person”),
galvanising the reader to ‘Trump fear and hate and let love in’. And
let’s face it, that’s a lesson we could all do well to remember.'
